The roughly textured bone dramatically increases surface area for tissue bonding strength. The heavy skin is securely attached creating virtually impenetrable armor needed to survive in a violent and dangerous environment. The rugose nature of the bone and the tightly bound integument also plays an essential role in allowing the animal to sense vibration (critical for locating prey).
